There is no expectation that children should know how to read or write before joining us though in practice, some children have begun to do so. We are looking for qualities such as potential, intelligence, cooperation, independence and an interest in and awareness of the world around them with respect for other people.
Inevitably, there is keen competition for places and the Head of Infants must exercise her professional judgement in offering places to those children who show most potential at assessment. Each child is considered entirely on his or her own individual merits.
Assessment for a place in Reception is carried out by the Head of Infants. For places in Year 1 and 2, the child is invited to spend at least half a day with a class. During this time, they work with their peers and we assess how they interact and perform in relation to children of the same age.
At the age of 7, boys and girls progress to the two single sex Junior Schools.
